I am looking for an image with my name and the book title for an e-book cover. It will be put up on Amazon which has the following requirements:
"Kindle Direct Publishing accepts two types of files for cover images:
JPEG, or .jpeg TIFF, or .tif(f)
KDP applies additional compression to images when displaying them on its website. For best results, images should be uploaded with minimal compression. Requirements for the size of your cover art have an ideal height/width ration of 1.6, this means:
A minimum of 625 pixels on the shortest side and 1000 pixels on the longest side
For best quality, your image would be 1563 pixels on the shortest side and 2500 pixels on the longest side."
You need to know about the book. A Brit of Pakistani origin learns that his younger brother - who is living in Pakistan - has been killed in a drone strike. He vows revenge and having attended the funeral in Pakistan returns to the UK where he goes on a sophisticated one man mission to cause as much havoc as possible. He manages to do great damage by creating, amongst other things, a surge of electricity through the national grid. As he does his worst he is up against a British M 16 agent who is a single mum with a young child (baby age). Its a fast paced action thriller with lots of plot.
First of all, there are some things I want to avoid. Camels. It seems to me most thrillers of this kind have a camel on the cover. I do actually have a camel scene but would rather not have it one the cover. I also don't want religious imagery: one of the points of the book is that the bomber is not motivated by religion but rather by the death of his brother.
I am looking for an iconic cover and have been wondering about the image of a British stamp with the queen's head in profile. It turns out, as I understand it, that you can use the image of stamp but you can not amend it in any way - so I am not sure it will work. I had thought about putting cracks either on the face or in the background but i think that breaches the rules. Since, I think, none of that is possible I wondered about a sheet of stamps with some removed leaving gaps for the title. Or one could use headers and footers. Having said this the image may become too fussy - so maybe it just does not work.
I wondered whether the national grid map might provide an image to work with but its not very recognisable so I am not sure that will work.
I also wondered about having the female spy on the cover but presume that anything with her child (baby age) will look silly. Maybe not? There is one scene in which she wears a burqa to conceal herself. Strictly speaking the sort of burqas worn by women in the areas she is operating in are the 'Taliban sky blue' with a grill over the eyes so I am not sure how we could see her face or hair. But I guess that's why i need an expert.
Perhaps it would help if I mentioned some other locations that are in the book: a Pakistani desert fort; Westminster cathedral during a Christmas service; the London eye (its a chase scene); a BNP pub in East London which he blows up; after he does his worst he returns to Pakistan hidden in a container ship.
The suggestions I have made are just rough ideas and I don't mind if you don't use any of them. I am very happy to discuss this further - if you have questions then e mail me on email@example.com
