Updated app icon for an iOS drawing/animation app

Arte e design
I’m a hobbyist app developer, and in 2008, I released an app called Kineo for the iPhone. Kineo was a simple animation toy that let you draw frame-by-frame “flipbook”-style animations on your iPhone and play them back. It did reasonably well, but eventually I didn’t have enough time to put into it, and I pulled it from the App Store in 2013. Now I’m looking to bring it back, with all new features and a new design… but the app icon it had in 2008 doesn’t exactly fit with the modern aesthetics of iOS, and I don’t have it in all the sizes I need for a new app. Kineo is still geared towards being more for fun than a professional animation tool, and the target audience reflects that. Kineo’s audience is vaguely 18–35, enjoys drawing, uses social media to show off what they make, but aren’t (yet?) professional artists or animators.

I’m looking for an updated icon to go along with the update to my iOS drawing/animation app, Kineo. I’ve attached the original icon in case it’s useful as a reference or starting point, but I’m not looking for a recreation of it. I'd like to keep the general themes (motion, sketching, etc.), but otherwise feel free to go with something completely new. It’s more important to me that it feels like a modern iOS app and fits with the current style of the system. There are a few aspects I think could be improved from the original icon. First and foremost is scalability. The original icon was designed at a time when the 57px app icon and the 512px App Store icon were the only sizes that mattered. The new version of the app icon will be displayed at much smaller sizes and a larger number of sizes overall. The older icon has too much detail to work well in this environment; at smaller sizes it’s hard to recognize. The second issue, somewhat related, is that it’s too muted. It looks quite elegant at large sizes, but the lack of (much) color or strong contrast means that it just becomes muddled and hard to recognize at smaller sizes. This in turn makes it not effective for use in marketing, such as for social media avatars, App Store results, etc. On a style perspective, I don’t have enough design chops to really say what I’m looking for. When I say “modern”, I don’t necessarily mean “flat”; I’m totally okay with gradients and shadows if that’s what’s makes a great-looking icon. Apps like Readdle’s Spark, Agilebits’s 1Password, and Junecloud’s Deliveries have the kind of character I’m thinking of. I need versions of the icon that match not only the standard square shape of iOS app icons, but also the 4:3 aspect ratio used for iMessage app icons. The specific sizes are described in this document: https://developer.apple.com/library/archive/qa/qa1686/_index.html. I’ve attached a colors guide that describes the colors used in the Kineo marketing so far. Again, I’m definitely not looking for strict adherence to that, but I’d prefer that this icon take color cues from that guide more than from the app itself; the website and marketing has so far turned out more how I wanted them to than the app did.
In case it’s useful as a point of reference: the horse in the legacy icon is a reference to the work _The Horse in Motion_ by Eadweard Muybridge, one of the earliest works of animation. The website at https://kineo.app shows how I'm planning on using color. I assume it makes sense for the app icon to be a bit less muted than that, but it should be another good reference point. Be sure to view it in both light and dark modes; the dark mode is a bit more colorful than the light mode is.
