For typography, we have a strong preference for humanist sans serif
found commonly in airport signage like Frutiger and Avenir. Keep in
mind that our web site's body text and smaller headlines will be set
in Source Sans Pro for technical and licensing reasons, so that would
be a solid choice if it fits your design - we're open to other fonts
in our logo, though, so don't let that constrain you. We do tend to
prefer the lighter weights of Source Sans Pro over the heavier ones,
and also find its spacing can be a bit awkward when used for logo
For additional typographical inspiration,
worth exploring. To help focus your efforts, logos with serifed fonts
or highly stylized, futuristic or decorative typefaces are unlikely
match our desired brand identity.
Stylistically, as we mentioned above in the color section, our app's
visual design is inspired by airport signage. Exploring the types of
visual layouts and iconography found in signage would be a good place
to start - just keep in mind the logo needs to stand out against an
entire web site filled with that sort of symbology.
This logo is likely to be used globally, so please avoid anything that
may be geocentric (e.g. one identifiable continent of a globe
or potentially offensive to any culture. Logos with added taglines in
English will also be unlikely to be accepted, as they would require
Since our name is abstract, it would be great if our logo conveyed
travel in some way to help customers quickly know what our app does.
By the same token, we have a preference for unique and memorable
visual forms that don't simply repeat the usual travel tropes: most
our competitors have logos involving suitcases and airplanes, and
like to stand out from the crowd if possible. We're definitely open
creative ways to incorporate those motifs into the logo, though (the
Northwest Airlines logo's incorporation of a compass and the FedEx
incorporation of an arrow are both elements we really like).
Keep in mind that recognizability at a distance is also very important
to us, as we will likely want to use this logo on window decals we
provide to hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions. No super
type or fine elements that won't reproduce well at low resolutions,
While this competition is currently only for a logo, we would be open
to considering a long term relationship with the winning designer for
additional assets and collateral going forward (business cards,
iconography, web site templates, etc.)!
We also intend to be highly involved during the contest - I commit to
providing feedback on every design that is submitted and will make
every effort to check in at least once every twelve hours during the
contest period. As an engineer with past experience working with
professional design teams, I know how important feedback and
is to building the perfect final product!
