Como Jeffdeville começou a jornada do(a) outro tipo de design gráfico

Visão geral

I'm a lone entrepreneur/developer bootstrapping a website I created called WishGenies. I'm 32, and I have very little artistic ability

Conte para a gente quem é você e quem é seu público alvo

WishGenies is a Facebook community that helps us all come up with great gift ideas. When I need help shopping for my wife, it asks other women who have similar interests. When someone else needs a gift for someone like me, I'm asked to make some suggestions too.

So my target audience is:
- Facebook users
- Who buy gifts for people at various points of the year

I'm trying to enhance the appeal of WishGenies, by introducing some gaming elements to the site. To see what I've started so far:

Requisitos

I'm looking for 3 static images that will be used on this website (a Facebook application) http://apps.facebook.com/wishgenies. Please go there so you can see what you're working with. Specifically, go to the site, click Get Started, and then click Check Your Requests. That first box at the top that has your picture is what will be replaced with a design driven on the winner's submissions. (More detailed size specs below).

WishGenies Background:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In a nutshell, WishGenies is a place where you can get gift suggestions for those people you struggle to buy gifts for. The concept is simple. If you're looking for a gift for a gourmet cook, WishGenies will ask other gourmet cooks what THEY think would be a good idea, and tell you. It's community driven though, and that means participation is important. That's where this project comes in. The plan is to start awarding points for doing various things on the site to support the community. As you get a certain number of points, your "Level" increases. Your job then, is to help me make those levels look good.

Request Objective
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm only asking for 3 levels right now, but there will be many more than that. I've asked for a few that I feel are different enough, that it will help me judge how well-rounded you are. The hope is that I'll be able to just go directly to you with work in the future.

So different point values correspond to different levels. That means that it needs to be obvious to the user that when they reach the next level, that they have achieved something. We've chose the metaphor of 'size' to convey this. As an anthill genie, you're very small (a new user). A Skyscraper Genie is of course, pretty big (moderately heavy user) and a Mountain Genies is huge (a power user).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is critical that I be able to look at your entries, and get that one is a greater honor than the other. Most of the entries I've received so far don't quite do that. Remember that size is something we understand from a relative perspective. For example, open gorilla.jpg below. How big is that gorilla in feet? 7, 8? Now open kong.jpg. Now how big is he? Much larger, even though they're the same pic. It was the woman and Godzilla that gave you something to compare to. That's exactly what I need here, but have yet to really see very well.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You're designing for the average Facebook user, which means that I'm not looking for something that would appeal to a teenaged boy. Almost all types of people are on Facebook these days. Please design accordingly. If it helps you get a sense of my taste, I like the feel of the Angry Birds cartoons/game. They're fun, and not sinister.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dimensions
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On to specifics, please look at diagram.jpg below. I would like to be able to use your graphic as the background image of this box. The first picture gives you an idea of what this space will be used for, and the 2nd shows more dimension information.

The background itself is 730px x 150px. 730px is set in stone, but if you find you really need to alter the height, you may do so +/- 20px. The genie graphic (currently represented by the little geek in the orange box) is currently too small. He must fit in a box no larger than 121x121px, but no smaller than 80 x 80. What I'm expecting then, is that the primary graphic (something that can stand alone by itself), will fit in that smaller box, and the rest of the image will just provide more context, location-wise, for the genie. So if you are working on the anthill genie, the genie and a little anthill MUST fit in the smaller box, and the rest of the background may be a field of grass with other ants scuttling to and fro. If this is the skyscraper, the genie and 1 skyscraper MUST be in the first box, and the rest of the background might be the rest of the cityscape.

Bear in mind that there will be text overlaying the background image, which means we'll need to find a way to provide enough contrast that the text isn't lost in the background. Same story with the Widget Label box to the right.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I said that the genie had to fit in that 121x121 box. This is why. I'm going to take that portion of the graphic, cut it out, and post it to the user's facebook wall when they achieve a new level. 121x121 is as big as you can get on Facebook's wall. So it's important that not only the genie, but enough of his surroundings fit in that box, for the box to stand alone by itself, and for a user to still get that that is a genie the size of an anthill, or that is a genie the size of a skyscraper.

The font in our logo is called Baveuse, and is attached. You can use it for any text that is NOT dynamic. The problem here is that using it for each user's name will be difficult, because the font is not commonly available to a browser.

Please let me know whether I have been unclear in anything. If you message me, I will provide my skype name to confer further.

I've provided some feedback on the best of the 2 designs so far in dlight-feedback, and domokun-feedback that I hope will be helpful in giving you a better feel for what I'm after.

Thank you for reading, and good luck!
