DESIGN BRIEF Project Description I am the author of a new book entitled, Design Your Own Destiny – Life Planning for the 21st Century. I need a dust jacket cover for this hardcover book—front cover, back cover, front flap, back flap and spine. The design must be usable by the printer printing the book (specification are listed later in this brief). Any artwork used must either be original or must be able to be used in a commercial manner without any copyright violations. The book will be printed in the April/May timeframe and I plan to have it distributed in print form [sold through Amazon, Barnes and Noble, BJ’s, Walmart, etc.] and also electronically [through Kindle and maybe others]. Book Description Design Your Own Destiny–Life Planning for the 21st Century is a life planning book that incorporates a life planning methodology with a twist. The two key premises of this life planning methodology are: first, that every person’s life is most happy and fruitful when they are in balance—and second, that any life plan must look at the person’s whole being—not just bits and pieces of it. It must look at the person’s mental and physical world—but also it must take into account their emotional and spiritual one as well. What this means to the reader is their life plan needs to incorporate: who they are, what talents they have, what their dreams are and ultimately where they want to go in the short and long term. The book provides the reader with the tools needed to help them evaluate which life choices are best for them based on their own personal values! The book’s methodology is different from anything else “out there” because of these two key points. There is nothing like it. This being said, this unique life planning process starts with an assessment of how “in balance” or “out of balance” a person is. From there, we create a life plan that focuses on the “whole” person—their Minds, their Physical / Material world [their Health and their Wealth], their spiritual relationship to something higher than themselves [God / the Universe] and their Emotions. By focusing on these key components, we can create a powerful life plan aimed at fulfilling the person’s goals and dreams—in their work life, their family life, their health, their passion, their material world and their in their spirits. Design Your Own Destiny provides a step-by-step, easy to learn methodology that people can use to create their own life plans. It brings someone from where they are now to where they want to go. In this book, I teach the reader not only how to create the plan of their dreams but also how to measure the plan and adjust it to their real life as events and circumstances unfold in their lives.
Target Audience - People of all ages, backgrounds, countries whose lives are in transition - People who are unhappy with their current life situation - People getting ready to retire - People who have just graduated and are looking for a career - Anyone over the age of 13 in transition - Anyone who wants to get from “here” to “there” – wherever “there” is for them - People under stress or transition who want to live a fulfilled, happy, balanced life—such as divorcees, people who were fired/laid off, moving, new parent, empty nester, etc. Might be in a crossroads in their life. - People willing to create a plan to get to where they want to go - The end reader might be someone who doesn’t even know that they need this book Potential Purchasers of this book - People who are conscious that they need help in figuring out their next steps. They know that they need to make a decision but they don’t know how to get there. - People who have someone in their lives who need this book; people who might recommend the book or buy for someone else—such as family members, co-workers, guidance counselors, doctors, therapists, social workers, college advisors, etc. Issues/Concerns for book readers - Stress in life - Not feeling fulfilled in current work or environment - Feel that they have a mission in life but they don't know what it is - Are "out of balance" and don't know how to fix this; aren't sure how to get from "here" to "there"; not sure where “there” is for them - Don’t know how to change their lives - Don’t know how to get what they want in life - Might hate current life situation and want a change - Want to live the life of their dreams and they don’t know how to get “there” from “here” Requirements and Specifications This is a 6x9 hardcover book and adherence to these submission requirements is critical. Title, subtitle and author must be on the front cover. Back cover material is attached. - 6-1/8" wide front and back panels - 9.25" tall front and back panels - 23/32" spine allowance - 3/8" allowance for both face edge wraps - 3.5" wide front and back flaps - Flat dimensions: 20-23/32" x 9-1/4' plus 1/8" minimum bleed all 4 sides. - Resolution: 300 dpi - Color Space: CMYK - Preferred file format: PDF and EPS files - Bleed: 1/8” (0.125”) all sides - Type safety: 1/4” (0.25”) all sides - Spine Type Safety: 1/16” (0.0625”) left/right sides - Spine = approx 23/32" (This is an estimate. We won’t know for sure until it is printed.) - The barcode should be built in 100% Black only and placed on a white background/box. Recommended size for the white box needed is 1-1/8" tall x 2" wide. We will provide the barcode once the winner is chosen. We are providing you with a back dust jacket cover with four quotes. You may eliminate the last quote if there is not sufficient room for it. We are not sure what works best for your design. The look and feel of your design take precedence over the number of quotes. Design Aesthetics - I am open to colors. We had a sample cover made with a blue and white color combination but we’d like more color. - The overall message from the design of the cover should convey balancing your life and your spirit to discover what’s next. It should say, “Maybe this book can help me or a loved one.” Or “you will figure things out.” [Definitely keep in mind that the audience are people at a crossroad / transition in their lives—not depressed.] - Aim for a cover that will get noticed. We want to be discussed on talk shows. We want buzz and a following. We’re open to: - Road/traveling but with a life component - Maybe a nature component - Maybe a map / compass - Colorful, inspiring - People need to be drawn to it - The da Vinci “Vitruvius” man drawing* [see note below] Please don’t forget the spiritual component of the book. Your Options We want your creativity in this cover. We do not want you limited by these ideas but we are providing them to you to spur on your creative genius! Inside the book, we have used a drawing of a person inside of a circle. It is a take-off on the Leonard da Vinci “Vitruvius Man” drawing. We are not certain though, that this rendition will be used in the final book. [This is called “inside Vitruvius man.jpg”.] We have had some people “play” with ideas and art work. We are supplying a pseudo Vitruvius Man drawing that we had done by an artist but this drawing is by no means required to be used by you. It can be used in combination with other things. If you choose to use this drawing, we do not necessarily want it up front and center. [We’ve provided 2 drawings. They are called “man with star.jpg” and “man_no star.jpg”.] We had a sample cover drawn up with this drawing and people thought that the book was an Astrology book and very “New Agey.”. The drawing was way too prominent. We do not want to be put in the New Age section of the bookstore. We want to be in the Self Improvement section—so we want to make sure that the message on the cover is clear. We think that the drawing can be used but no so "in your face". We would like to see your creativity with the drawings AND without. We are VERY EXCITED to be working with you and we can’t wait to see what you come up with! Last, we will need to work with the design winner to finalize the dust jacket cover in the next few weeks. We are missing 1 thing—the ISBN/bar-code as mentioned above.
