You Always Need a Plan B. The real deal guide to jump starting your next career.
I am on a mission to help people avoid the pitfalls of making the wrong (and costly) decisions when they create a new way to make money- Plan B.
I am a consultant, speaker, and trainer who worked in Corporate America for 20 years; Apple Computer, Nortel and Silicon Graphics. Two master’s degrees: MBA and International Human Resources. I live by NASA Kennedy Space Center, FL; 9000 people will lose their jobs 2011 at the end space shuttle program. This was originally written to help them. Everyone is selling them their "stuff' without telling them what it will take for success.
Readers will have a love-hate relationship with it as one Engineering Director reviewer said: "I had to put it down because the documented reality is so searing. You bring a great deal of reality to the subject, spurring me along on Plan B." Or a retired secretary: "I can go home and start a business now because I know how."
The book is ~ 100 pages packed with checklists, self assessments, advantages -disadvantages of the four ways to create an income: start a business, buy a business, buy a franchise, network marketing/direct sales.
Many people have great ideas but don’t make money from them; this book will show them how. It’s not quick or easy. This came from 3 years of research and many mistakes finding my Plan B. (BTW I have 2 condos close to the beach for sale in Cape Canaveral. Interested?)
My original target was baby boomers who can't or don't want to retire. I have found a lot of young professionals are keenly interested too. Those in their 20s and 30s will never know job or career security. Boomers are retiring and finding their money is running out or are laid off and can't find another job and being forced into a Plan B.
They have done what they were told: get a good education, find a good job and work hard. Then they find themselves without a job and few options. So many will hand over their severance or cash out their retirement and fail in their new venture because they did not know what it really takes to succeed in a new business. My mission is to make sure they can work through their idea before they jump in.
My reviewers are blue collar, pink collar and white collar. Executives and production workers. Retirees and young professionals. They are giving me great insight to edit the book before it is published.
Plan B will become a movement that will help others ask the right questions so they don’t find themselves realizing they made a very bad mistake 6 months or three years later. This is about sustainable business 101 - the stuff they don't teach you in business school.
I will be on the speaking circuit with the book. This is the first in a You Always Need a Plan B books, like Chicken soup for the Soul series.
- The book cover needs to be understood by someone seeing it on a bookshelf from 10' away.
- Clear, clean, easy to read and 'get it.'
- The cover will be the basis for the website design, banners, and promotional material.
- Although the majority of sales will be eBook readers (like Kindle) and Amazon.com the cover should be one to make people nod their head 'yes' and reach for it when they see it.
- BACK: top 1/3 will be testimonials, 1/3 synopsis (sales message) in 50 words or less, bottom bio of less than five sentences and a the author's picture At the very bottom will be an offer for them to go to the website and sign up for updates. (http://www.YouAlwaysNeedaPlanB.com)
- SPINE: title, author's name, space for publisher name
This is a serious book, so happy, fluffy colors or images won't work. No cutesy, cartoon images. Stock photos or images are fine. No tired images like palm trees and a hammock or empty chairs
- Identity the color type and numbers
I am not certain what they should be because it will be ENLARGED for banners, and SHRUNK for flyers and used on the website. So using the website recommendations:
