I'm looking to install a third piece of permanent art on my body! The planned location is on my left wrist, facing me (it's for my enjoyment, not to show off to others). And I want it to feature one of my favorite quotes from one of my most-adored writers: Oscar Wilde.
This is the quote I want featured in the tattoo:
"Nothing that is worth knowing can be taught."
From _A Few Maxims for the Instruction of the Over-Educated_ (1894).
No need to include an attribution for Mr. Wilde. I want the quote itself to be the star.
As for style, I'm not looking for anything overstyled, sailor jerry, or classic. Not looking for current trends like watercolor, either. Think more timeless that will look just as classy when I'm 80 as it does today.
No clipart or stock imagery, please. I love the rough-hewn, imperfect edges of handmade and hand-drawn things, and I want this design to reflect that. More organic and less perfect vectors.
I imagine something more typographic/handwritten, maybe with some small design flourishes or other literary detail. Remember your canvas is small (my wrist).
I was enamored with the idea of having this quote inked in Wilde's own handwriting, but I haven't been able to hack that together in a way that makes me happy. I've attached a cut-pasted sample of what the quote might look like in Wilde's own hand by splicing together different samples of his handwriting available online. If you can make this work, go for it! But I'm here because I haven't been able to make it successful and am open to other ideas.
It might help to know my other two tattoos:
• Celtic trinity knot on my back, between shoulder blades
• Jane Austen quote in her handwriting on the nape of my neck
This Wilde quote is sort of a marrying of my literary and Irish backgrounds, and thus a sort of bringing together of my existing tattoos.
